95. Sylosis - 'Cycle Of Suffering'

Sylosis - Cycle Of Suffering album cover 2020 and review

The long overdue return of Sylosis. Josh Middleton’s absorption into Architects in 2016 may have resulted in a temporary hiatus of activities, but it was never meant to be full stop. Now juggling being in both acts, Josh has regrouped his old bandmates and taken Sylosis through another musical evolution. The rather excellent “Dormant Heart” saw them graduate from thrash into a much more mature and prog tinged sound. Here they take another leap into melodic death metal territory, sounding in places like In Flames in their prime (which in my book is not a bad thing at all). There is a real complexity to their new sound. Yes, it is still in your face and aggressive, but it manages to have multiple layers that unfold as you listen. The tracks here don’t stay still, they mutate before your ears, constantly keeping you on your toes. I was never quite sure where it was going, but I know that I really liked it
